Day three - dig deeper into the historic cradle of civilization over the past 1,000 years - medieval Islamic masterpieces, early Christian chapels, and the iconic River Nile are at hand.
Salah El-Din Citadel & Mohamed Ali Mosque:
High above Cairo sits the dramatic medieval citadel, dating back to the 12th century and originally constructed by the mighty Saladin. From here you’ll be able to enjoy views all across the cityscape. Within the ramparts is the Ottoman alabaster-covered Mohamed Ali Mosque, built between 1830 and 1848 and reaching skywards with two minarets and a massive central dome. The inside is beautiful and awe-inspiring as sunlight streams through fancy windows creating an ambiance of light and wonder.
Coptic Cairo — Christianity's Ancient Heartland:
Walk into the oldest Christian city on Earth. A place of churches stacked atop churches, time-weathered alleyways and still- beating history, this labyrinth called Coptic Cairo boasts attractions like the Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa), precariously suspended above the entrance gate of a Roman fort and the 3rd century AD Holy Family’s refuge from Herod; the Church of St. Sergius built atop the crypt the Holy Family rested in during their escape to Egypt; and one of the most ancient synagogues on the African continent – the Ben Ezra Synagogue. The stones of these sacred places speak volumes.
